INTRODUCTION - HOWDY!


Howdy there! I thought up this blog because someone out there just might have a roofing question, somewhere, out there in cyberspace. I have been in the roofing business, working primarily as an estimator/project manager. And now, with the ease in setting up blogs, here I am at your disposal! So, before I start to post and field questions, I want people to know even though I have been in the business since 1998, I don't know the answer to every single roof and roofing related question, but I should be able to point you in the right direction!

What's the Big Deal About T-Lock Shingles?

1.) They ain't making them anymore and #2.) They are absolutely the worst shingles that were ever produced! But seriously folks, I can put my hand underneath a T-Lock shingle - THERE IS NO SEALING STRIP and this salient fact makes it a very inferior shingle, in comparison to laminated dimensional shingles; they also take 2 nails, versus 6 on dimensionals. So, because they don't make them anymore, they are considered "Non-repairable," which has resulted in numerous roof replacements in Lakewood, Colorado & environs. Don't worry though, select a reputable re-roofing company to look at your roof before you call your insurance to see if you have a potential claim. A VERY COMMON ROOFING PROBLEM ...

Roof leaks are one of the most common problems in the roofing industry. I call it job security, but joking aside, there are reasons for these problems. Probably the most common leak situation is a leak around metal flashing around a chimney or skylight. Either the afore mentioned item was not flashed correctly to begin with and/or the sealant is worn. There is an outside chance that the metal has rusted away, however the previously mentioned causes are usually to blame. Now, normally, I could say, well, if there is just one layer of roofing, go ahead and reseal or replace the flashing. If there is more than one layer of roofing, the odds of solving the problem get better if the roofing is removed and your selected roofer replaces the roofing and flashing completely and he/she can then give a reasonable guarantee to the new roofing system.
