Finding a Qualifed Roofer In Your Town

Believe it or not, many people have been burned by a roofing contractor that has put too much "con" in the word contracting. It's best if you can locate a roofing contractor that has been in the business for quite a while and has a decent reputation. First, I would start with your local Chamber of Commerce or local branch of the better business bureau - BBB. You can also call your Insurance Agent or Real Estate Agent. It's best to get a few names and then run those past friends or professional acquaintances (say a Doctor or Lawyer); word of mouth can and does help alot. If a roofer is good and ethical, and has worked in your immediate neighborhood, there is a good chance they will do a good job on your project. The company that I do the most work for was endorsed by a local/regional consumer advocate, who bats for homeowners.
Once you do find a qualified roofing contractor, it is a good idea to prove that they have liability insurance, god forbid any accidents should happen. The issue of subcontractors comes up occasionally. This is neither good, nor bad, since the construction industry is dominated by the subcontractor framework and has been for several generations; chances are that your house was supervised by a "General Contractor (GC)" and several subs did each of the components of the house - this is true of custom homes and tract home developments.
