But seriously folks, I can put my hand underneath a T-Lock shingle - THERE IS NO SEALING STRIP and this salient fact makes it a very inferior shingle, in comparison to laminated dimensional shingles; they also take 2 nails, versus 6 on dimensionals. Believe it or not, many people have been burned by a roofing contractor that has put too much "con" in the word contracting. It's best if you can locate a roofing contractor that has been in the business for quite a while and has a decent reputation. First, I would start with your local Chamber of Commerce or local branch of the better business bureau - BBB. You can also call your Insurance Agent or Real Estate Agent. It's best to get a few names and then run those past friends or professional acquaintances (say a Doctor or Lawyer); word of mouth can and does help alot. If a roofer is good and ethical, and has worked in your immediate neighborhood, there is a good chance they will do a good job on your project. The company that I do the most work for was endorsed by a local/regional consumer advocate, who bats for homeowners. Roof leaks are one of the most common problems in the roofing industry. I call it job security, but joking aside, there are reasons for these problems. Probably the most common leak situation is a leak around metal flashing around a chimney or skylight. Either the afore mentioned item was not flashed correctly to begin with and/or the sealant is worn. There is an outside chance that the metal has rusted away, however the previously mentioned causes are usually to blame. Now, normally, I could say, well, if there is just one layer of roofing, go ahead and reseal or replace the flashing. If there is more than one layer of roofing, the odds of solving the problem get better if the roofing is removed and your selected roofer replaces the roofing and flashing completely and he/she can then give a reasonable guarantee to the new roofing system. Howdy there! I thought up this blog because someone out there just might have a roofing question, somewhere, out there in cyberspace. I have been in the roofing business, working primarily as an estimator/project manager. And now, with the ease in setting up blogs, here I am at your disposal!
